AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN WRITING NARRATIVE TEXT AT ELEVENTH GRADE OF SMAN 2 KOTO BARU

This research was conducted based on students’ problem. They have difficulties to write and no have idea to make a writing or unable to convey the message to the text effectively especially in narrative text, they have less of vocabulary in writing and also do not understand how to used generic structure and grammar in narrative text. This research is aimed to find out how the students’ ability in writing narrative text at eleventh grade of SMAN 2 Koto Baru. Then, the researcher analyzed how the result of the student’s ability in narrative text based on the data.
This research was qualitative analysis research in content. The data collection technique used documentation of students test and transcript of interview. This research involved the 24 students of class XI IPS 3 SMAN 2 Koto Baru in the academic year of 2020/2021 and the English teacher as the research collaborator. The data of the study were in the forms of qualitative data, the qualitative data were obtained by documentation of students test in narrative text and transcript of interview. The students score will be discuss with description.
The result of this research found that the ability of students in writing narrative text is in poor category, it is proved by the finding that most of the students had low score. It can be known that the mean score was (51,79), there are 12 (50%) students got poor category, then 4 (16,67%) students got average category, 5 (20,83%) students got good category and last only 3 (12,50%) students got excellent category. That is showed the students of eleventh grade at SMAN 2 Koto Baru difficult to writing narrative text and should be more understand again about generic structure, grammar and also memorized more vocabulary to avoid minor mistake in writing.
